I can so empathize with your feelings towards animals. As a veterinarian, I've worked with so many suffering animals. But these are animals I can help in some fashion or another. It's the suffering animals that I don't have access to helping that break my heart every time I see them.
I think the world needs people who still notice things like this, even when it's hard. Thanks for writing it.
